providing the cover you need
Every high-value home insurance policy from Rivr includes tailored antiques insurance. We provide cover for your most valuable possessions, whether kept at home, in storage or on loan for exhibition. All-risk protection is included as part of a single home insurance product, offering reassurance wherever your items are located.
Our antiques insurance policies are designed for those who collect fine art antiques, antique furniture and decorative objects of historical value. Items are protected at home, during storage, while in transit, or when displayed externally. The policy covers theft, accidental damage and physical loss, with fair claims handling and compensation based on true worth.
Your valuable items are protected against:
Each piece is evaluated for its overall value, not just material cost. Optional terms may apply depending on your policy schedule, environment or valuation.
If a professional valuation exists, claims may be settled on an agreed value basis. We also provide cover for market value increases up to 150 percent, helping your antiques insurance reflect the current and accurate market value of your collection.
There is no need to itemise every piece individually. Any one item under £25,000 is covered automatically. Newly acquired antiques and fine art are protected for 60 days, giving you time to upload supporting documentation or valuations.
Manage your home insurance policy online, upload valuations at your convenience and access live documentation. If you need to make a claim, your dedicated advisor provides independent advice, handles restoration arrangements and helps maintain peace of mind throughout the process.
To maintain condition and long-term value, antiques and fine art should be handled with care. The following best practices help reduce avoidable damage:
Furniture and cabinetry
Ceramics and glassware
Books, paper items and rare editions
While not part of your insurance policies, many collectors use professionals for restoration, storage and international transport. These services help maintain value and reduce handling risk. Our antiques insurance policies also provide cover for partial restoration, transit loss and appreciation in market value, subject to full terms.

Where a professional valuation exists, antiques claims may be settled up to 150 percent of the specified amount, reflecting market movements where eligible.
Newly purchased antiques are automatically covered for 60 days for up to 25% of your contents sum insured, giving you time to let us know so they can be added to your schedule.

faq
Insurance can be complicated. Here are answers to the questions we are asked most.
With Rivr you do not need a standalone antiques policy. Antiques sit under your high value contents cover as “fine art and antiques”, alongside the rest of your household possessions. They are insured for “all risks of physical loss or damage” at home and anywhere in the world, up to the sums insured and single-item limits shown on your schedule.
For policy purposes, antiques are grouped under “fine art and antiques”. This includes collectable furniture, silverware, ceramics, porcelain and china, glassware, clocks, barometers, sculptures, rugs, tapestries, books, manuscripts, coins, medals and similar items of special, high quality or artistic merit that form part of a collection. Jewellery and watches are covered separately under their own category.
You can insure contents (including fine art and antiques) up to £500,000 with Rivr. Within that, unspecified fine art and antiques are covered up to £25,000 per item, pair or set, and higher-value pieces can be specified individually so they are insured at an agreed value, with market appreciation up to 150% where a current valuation exists.
Yes. rivr’s contents cover is worldwide as standard, so your antiques are protected at home and abroad, subject to the sums insured and policy conditions. They’re also covered during professional removals and short-term storage to a new UK home, and there is specific cover available for antiques kept in permanent commercial storage, with percentage limits and some exclusions set out in the wording.
Yes. Newly acquired possessions, including antiques, are automatically covered for up to 25% of your contents sum insured for 60 days, as long as you tell Rivr within that period so your schedule and sums insured can be updated. That gives you time to buy, value and add new pieces without gaps in cover.
You don’t need a valuation for every lower-value piece, but current professional valuations are strongly recommended for higher-value items and anything you want to specify individually. They help set accurate sums insured, reduce the risk of underinsurance, and are required for Rivr to apply market appreciation cover (up to 150% of the specified sum insured) on fine art and antiques at claim stage.
You should have enough cover to replace everything in your home, including items you take out with you. A good approach is to walk through your home room by room and estimate the value of everything as per room (both visible and stored items). This includes:
Furniture, curtains, and rugs
Electronics (phones, laptops, TVs, etc.)
White goods, cutlery, crockery, pots & pans
Clothing, shoes, books, trinkets, and sports equipment
Think in terms of a worst-case scenario. What would it cost to replace everything today?
Important: Valuable items such as jewellery, watches, fine art, antiques, collectibles, and guns are not included in the general contents sum insured, these items are covered under a separate section of the same policy.

This guide explains when contents insurance makes sense, what is and is not covered, how to calculate an accurate value for all the items you want to protect, and how Rivr handles claims for lost or damaged items.
Determining the value of your home contents is essential for ensuring you have the right level of insurance coverage. Many homeowners underestimate the value of their belongings, which can lead to inadequate insurance and significant out-of-pocket expenses in the event of a loss.
